Why did you choose TCH?
“I chose to do my PGY2 Pediatric Specialty Residency at Texas Children’s Hospital for several reasons. First, I was looking for a pediatric specialty residency position that would allow me to practice and gain more confidence with pediatric clinical pharmacy skills, and I felt that TCH would give me ample opportunities and experiences to do this since it is one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country. One of my interests is the newborn intensive care unit, and TCH has a large, level III NICU, which I was very excited about since I was previously at a hospital with a very small NICU. Even though I have a strong interest in the NICU, I knew that by participating in a PGY2 at TCH I would become a well-rounded pediatric clinical pharmacist with knowledge in general pediatrics as well as many subspecialties that TCH has to offer.

Second, I wanted to delve into the education and teaching aspect of being a pediatric clinical pharmacist. The PGY2 at TCH has an education and teaching component that I was very interested in. Among the education and teaching opportunities available during the PGY2 residency at TCH are participating in a teaching seminar and the opportunity to work with pharmacy students.

TCH is a prestigious pediatric hospital that offers many opportunities and has a great pharmacy staff. I also chose TCH because of the great clinical pharmacy specialists. I was very excited to learn from all of their expertise. I felt that they would help me to become a well-rounded and successful pediatric clinical pharmacist.”

Why did you choose TCH?
“Texas Children’s Hospital was my first choice for many reasons. First of all, the clinical experiences TCH has to offer clearly make it stand above the rest in terms of educational opportunities. Texas Children’s is the largest pediatric hospital in the U.S. and sits in the epicenter of the largest medical center in the world. The services they offer made my decision an easy one. Coming into my PGY2 year I was interested in cardiology, and critical care. Texas Children’s has leading programs in both of these categories with a dedicated cardiovascular ICU and the largest neonatal ICU in the country. In addition to these programs they also offer other leading clinical and academic opportunities that sparked my interest. I had not previously had experience with other programs they offer such as solid organ transplant, a teaching/academia program with the University of Houston, and the ability to precept PharmD candidates and teach didactic lectures if I was interested in doing so. Secondly, the pharmacy department boasts a full staff of clinical pharmacy specialists and preceptors that are highly trained and vastly experienced in their respective areas of clinical expertise. The majority of clinical pharmacy specialists have been practicing in their specific areas of pediatric care for quite some time now. This appealed to me, because I wanted to maximize my PGY2 year by learning from a large and diverse group of highly experienced clinical pharmacists. I also was impressed by the enormity and diversity of the patient population they care for at Texas Children’s. Kids are sent from all corners of the globe just to receive treatment here at TCH. This also means that we see almost anything and everything when it comes to pediatric illnesses. I felt this aspect of the institution was something that only a few leading pediatric institutions in the U.S. could rival. In addition, Texas Children’s Hospital is also the largest pediatric hospital in the U.S. and has incredible plans for expansion with their “Vision 2010.” With this in mind I could easily recognize that TCH was the right place for me based upon the experience and enthusiasm of the pharmacists who work here, their dedication to the residency program, the patient population they serve, and the opportunities for pediatric clinical experience that are offered here.”
