The clinical pharmacy staff was asked
"What advice would you give the incoming residents,
knowing what you do now after completing residencies?"
- Don't forget to exercise-- even if for 20-30 minutes-- it will keep you healthy, help you sleep, and minimize stress.
- Keep an open mind-- sometimes the "TCH way" isn't ridiculous-- there may actually be some method to the madness!
- Use and continually update your Microsoft®
Outlook calendar. If you want to meet with someone, send them a meeting request (after consulting their calendar). Remember-- your preceptors have far more responsibilities than you might imagine!
- Good reading glasses, good lighting, and a good alarm clock.
- Keep a log of all your questions / answers - you won't forget them that way, and you'll be amazed at what you have accomplished at the end of the year.
- Don’t abandon your faith or your friends for the sake of residency.
- Take hold of every opportunity you can while you are here – after you start your ‘real job’, those opportunities don’t come quite as easily.
- Approach every rotation with the mentality of "What if I had to do this by myself in 4 weeks?" It will help you to focus and really understand what’s important.
- If you don’t understand something – look it up first, then go to your preceptor with an informed question.
- Preceptors are still learning too!
And finally, unanimous advice from the clinical pharmacy staff:
You get out of it what you put into it!!!
