TEXAS CHILDREN'S PHARMACY DEPARTMENT
Advice for Incoming Residents

The clinical pharmacy staff was asked "What advice would you give the incoming residents, knowing what you do now after completing residencies?"

Below are some of the responses...

  • Don't forget to exercise-- even if for 20-30 minutes-- it will keep you healthy, help you sleep, and minimize stress.
  • Keep an open mind-- sometimes the "TCH way" isn't ridiculous-- there may actually be some method to the madness!
  • Use and continually update your Microsoft® Outlook calendar. If you want to meet with someone, send them a meeting request (after consulting their calendar). Remember-- your preceptors have far more responsibilities than you might imagine!
  • Good reading glasses, good lighting, and a good alarm clock.
  • Keep a log of all your questions / answers - you won't forget them that way, and you'll be amazed at what you have accomplished at the end of the year.
  • Don’t abandon your faith or your friends for the sake of residency.
  • Take hold of every opportunity you can while you are here – after you start your ‘real job’, those opportunities don’t come quite as easily.
  • Approach every rotation with the mentality of "What if I had to do this by myself in 4 weeks?" It will help you to focus and really understand what’s important.
  • If you don’t understand something – look it up first, then go to your preceptor with an informed question.
  • Preceptors are still learning too!

And finally, unanimous advice from the clinical pharmacy staff:

You get out of it what you put into it!!!
