Texas Children’s Ophthalmology Clinic
Children who need plastic surgery of
the eyes, or surgical treatment for eye disorders come to Texas
Children's Ophthalmology Clinic from around the world.
The most common problem corrected with
surgery by ophthalmologists at Texas Children's is strabismus, which
is an eye muscle imbalance commonly known as crossed eyes, lazy
eyes, or wandering eyes. Both children and
adults are surgically treated
for
strabismus at Texas Children's
Hospital.
Other problems treated in the clinic
include:
- Congenital cataracts
- Droopy eyelids (ptosis)
- Tear duct obstructions (blocked tear
duct)
- Childhood glaucoma
-
Retinoblastoma (a cancer of the eye)
- Neurologic eye disorders
Doctors in the ophthalmology clinic
also work closely with neonatologists to identify and treat
retinopathy of prematurity, an eye ailment common to premature
infants.
The clinic's doctors perform more
than 1,000 procedures each year and see almost 10,000 patients
annually. They also are involved in
clinical
research to help improve the treatment of pediatric eye
disorders. An active teaching program trains ophthalmologists for
the Cullen Eye Institute, which was rated as one of the top eye
treatment centers in the country by U.S. News & World Report in
2001.
Patients are seen by Texas Children's
ophthalmologists through self-referral or physician referral.
Note: Routine vision tests and eyeglass prescriptions are not handled in
this clinic.
