VISITING THE HOSPITAL
Family services floor

In keeping with its family-centered care concept, Texas Children’s has consolidated useful resources on the new family services floor, located on the 16th floor of the West Tower. Resources on the family services floor include the following:

Hair salon
The hospital’s hair salon, staffed by Fantastic Sam’s, offers free basic services for patients and parents. Please ask your child’s nurse for hours of operation. Call 832-826-1609 for an appointment.

Pi Beta Phi Patient/Family LibraryPi Beta Phi Patient/Family Library
The Pi Beta Phi Patient/Family Library, founded in 1984 by Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, offers books for all ages, medical and parenting resources, paperback fiction, magazines, foreign language books and storytimes.

Pi Beta Phi book nooks are located in waiting rooms in the Clinical Care Center, West Tower and Abercrombie buildings. In addition, book nooks can be found in many Texas Children's Pediatric Associates practices and on the SuperKids Mobile Clinic.

Preteen Room
The preteen room, for patients ages 8 to 12, features a stage, video games, a pool table, an air hockey table, scheduled craft projects and Starbright computer stations. Starbright allows patients to play games, access the Internet and either chat online or videoconference with children at other hospitals. Hours for the preteen room are posted on the door.

Radio Lollipop
Children at Texas Children’s Hospital get a dose of the sweetest medicine of all — laughter. Radio Lollipop, Texas Children’s award-winning, in-hospital radio station, broadcasts through the hospital’s television system on Channel 18 on “Terrific Tuesdays” and “Thrilling Thursdays,” 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Each broadcast features interactive games, art projects and contests in which patients can win prizes.

Patients also can visit the studio and watch presenters play Top 40 hits and children’s favorites. Children may request songs from their rooms by calling 832-826-7890.

Radio Lollipop is coordinated by the Child Life and Volunteer Services departments and staffed by its own team of dedicated volunteers. These volunteers lead patients in activities from the studio and at bedside. These activities create fun and excitement for patients, giving them something to look forward to at the end of a long day.

Texas Children’s is one of two Radio Lollipop hospitals in the nation. Call Volunteer Services at 832-824-2257 or tune in to Channel 18 on Texas Children’s Hospital TV for more information about Radio Lollipop.

School classroom
Classroom instruction is available to patients staying at Texas Children’s for more than five days. Ask the nurse about enrolling your child, or call 832-826-1660 for more information.

Snack area
A lounge with vending machines and microwave ovens is open 24 hours a day for families. A deli featuring freshly brewed coffees and assorted menu items also is available 10:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. daily in the same area.

Teen room
The teen room is for patients ages 13 and older. It includes a theater screen for patients to watch movies as well as Starbright computer stations. Patients also may play video games, listen to music, enjoy various crafts or play pool. Hours are posted on the door.
