National study will look at German-made heart pump for children needing heart transplants

Berlin Heart

Texas Children’s has been named the national lead center for a 12-hospital, 36-month clinical trial of the a German-manufactured pediatric heart pump called Berlin Heart EXCOR Pediatric Ventricular Assist Device (VAD).

Charles D. Fraser, Jr., MD, chief of pediatric and congenital heart surgery at Texas Children’s and professor, Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, will serve as the National Principal Investigator (NPI) for the Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) prospective study. As NPI, Fraser will work in cooperation with10 United States hospitals and 2 Canadian hospitals, in collecting and reporting data to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the safety and probable benefit of the pediatric heart pump. At the study’s conclusion, Berlin Heart, Inc. will present those data to the FDA for consideration of approval of the EXCOR Pediatric VAD for use in the U.S.

BIPAI’s pediatric AIDS center in Romania grows up

BIPAI

A center that opened in Romania in 2001 to help young children with HIV/AIDS survive for longer periods is now adapting to its success with an expanded focus of caring for the adult needs of these individuals.

Formal ceremonies were held to dedicate the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative’s Romanian Clinical Center of Excellence. The center is a joint program of the Infectious Diseases Hospital Constanta, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital.

Texas Children's physicians battle on the frontline against diabetes

Texas Children’s Endocrine and Diabetes Care Center is at the forefront of researching ways to prevent and control diabetes and its complications.

Type 1 diabetes, which accounts for about 70 percent of new diabetes cases in children, occurs when the body does not produce insulin, a hormone that converts sugar (glucose), starches and other food into energy.

In Type 2 diabetes, the most common f o rm in adults, the body does not produce enough insulin because the cells are resistant to the actions of the insulin that is produced. About 30 percent of new cases in children are Type.

17th annual Texas Children's Hospital International Colloquium

This year marks the 17th Annual Texas Children's International Colloquium, a symposium that brings together physicians from around the world. The International Colloquium is held in conjunction with the Baylor Pediatric Postgraduate Symposium.

From Latin America to Europe, physicians join Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine pediatric specialists and subspecialists to discuss the latest advancements in pediatric medicine and research.

The 2008 International Colloquium offers three core experiences:

  • Scientific and academic presentation of the latest advancements in pediatric medicine and research, focusing on Neonatology

  • Experiential learning from core hospital services and key physicians in an interactive setting

  • Exposure to hospital leadership and key departments essential to providing comprehensive pediatric healthcare delivery
