CAREERS
Professional growth

Employees are regularly asked what they like most about working at Texas Children’s. Their answers typically emphasize our mission of providing the finest possible pediatric patient care, education and research. They also enjoy challenging responsibilities and opportunities for growth and learning.

As a teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s has a high standard of learning and achievement for all employees. Employees set professional development goals to continually sharpen their skills and enrich their workplace. In fact, learning begins the moment a new employee arrives.

Everyone here was supportive of my schooling, and I received great benefits, from tuition reimbursement to a book scholarship. Texas Children’s understood education was a major goal for me."

Texas Children’s Learning Academy provides high-quality training right here on our campus. Three tracks – Pride in Performance for all employees, Family-Centered Care for clinical staff and High-Performance Leadership for leaders – ensure targeted training and development for all our employees.

Employees also are encouraged to seek outside learning and networking opportunities. We offer generous tuition reimbursement and financial support to encourage continuous learning.

We believe there’s an art to caring for children and families that goes beyond science. Programs are available to help nurses without pediatric backgrounds make the transition into a rewarding new experience.

Texas Children’s Hospital offers paid pediatric nursing internships specifically designed for experienced registered nurses and nurses enrolled in graduate programs.

Project STEP: Students Transitioning Effectively into Practice  is a collaborative effort between Texas Children’s Hospital and local partner universities that offers a work-study/scholarship program for full-time, undergraduate nursing students.

For new employees at Texas Children’s, opportunities to learn and grow are endless. And, as part of the Texas Medical Center community, the potential to collaborate with other professionals beyond Texas Children’s is limitless.

Project STEP

Texas Children’s Hospital, The University of Texas-Houston School of Nursing and Houston Baptist University School of Nursing have teamed up to offer a work-study/scholarship program for nursing students. Project STEP (Students Transitioning Effectively into Practice) provides each student:

  • a paid opportunity to increase clinical exposure through employment as professional student nurses at Texas Children’s Hospital
  • tuition-paid independent study program, with hours serving as the required elective credit toward graduation
  • supervised clinical experience to help increase organizational and time management skills, clinical competence and team participation
  • a $500 scholarship for full-time undergraduate study following completion of the first semester of STEP
  • experience in the health care delivery system beyond traditional learning opportunities
  • professional development opportunities for interfacing with patient care teams
  • opportunities to interview upon graduation for employment at Texas Children’s

Project STEP applications are accepted from full-time undergraduate students in good academic standing with a partner university. For more information, call 832-824-2907.
